Bolling family genealogical notes, 1646-1738.

Consists of handwritten notes which appear in John Purvis's Collection of Laws of Virginia [1682], a volume in the collections of the Library of Virginia. The notes concern the Bolling family and include genealogical notes written by Robert Bolling, born in England 1646, concerning his two wives, Jane Rolfe and Anne Stith, and their children. There is also a certification of the number of inhabitants in Charles City County in 1699. Also included are notes concerning the children and grandchildren of Robert Bolling, a 1711 list of slaves belonging to John Bolling, a 1709 list of slaves received by Mrs. Anne Bolling, and an undated poem.

Robert Bolling (1738-1775) was born in Henrico County, VA. He was schooled in England, and was a gifted linguist. Additionally, Bolling studied law in both England and Williamsburg. While living in Buckingham County Bolling was elected to the House of Burgesses, where he served for four years.
